Students under STATE TERROR

SFS-1Sri Lankan airforce planes fly over the northern Tamil district of Kilinochchi. The planes were not attacking this area, but everyone rushed for shelter. SFS-2Children huddle for safety. Many innocent civilians have been killed in a war that has left more than 70,000 dead. SFS-3Here teachers take shelter in drains. The heaviest fighting is now further north. The military says it is inflicting heavy defeats on the Tamil Tigerswho want a separate homeland for Tamils.
SFS-4People wait under a tree for the flights to finish. A ceasefire in 2002 brought hopes for peace but collapsed a long time ago.
SFS-5The war has had a terrible impact on civilian life. Recent months have also seen a string of Tamil Tiger attacks on civilian targets in the capital, Colombo
