Muslim Congress Will Not Coalesce: Pre-emptying A Muslim Chief Minister in the East

Tue, 2008-03-25 13:20 By Our Political Correspondent
Colombo, 25 March, (Asiantribune.com): Sri Lanka Muslim Congress will do it alone and will not coalesce with any other party, the Government or the Opposition. It will contest the East Provincial Council Elections without having any truck with the ruling party. They announced that they will not contest the election under betel leaf symbol of the United People’s Freedom Alliance. The resulting division of the Muslim vote would mean a lost opportunity to have a Muslim as the Chief Minister of the East.
The Muslims failed to find a consensus formula to contest under UPFA or under any other common Alliance. A representative meeting organized by the Muslim United UMMA yesterday failed to arrive at a consensus and went their separate ways.
At that meeting, a delegation of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and the Muslim ministers in the ruling UPFA participated to explore the possibilities of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress contesting jointly with all the Muslims under the UPFA banner. It was organized by the UMMA chairman Dr. Marikkar, along with its leading members Lateef and Jiffry.
The meeting was held in the Sri Lanka Parliament complex and it lasted according to a source for well over two hours.
Sri Lanka Muslim Congress was represented by its leader Rauff Hakeem and General Secretary of the party Hasan Ali, Chairman Bashir Segudawood, with Majeed and UTM Anwer. On the other side ministers, Ferial Ashraff, Ameer Ali Sihabdeen, A. L. M. Athaullah, Abdul Risath Bathiyutheen, M. Musthapha and also Y.L.S. Hameed, and N.M. Shaheed Lebbe – President and Secretary of the All Ceyylon Muslim Congress too participated.
After the meeting sources close to the Muslim Ministers said that they reported the outcome of the meeting with Sri Lanka Muslim Congress to UPFA leaders Nimal Siripala de Silva and Susil Premajayantha.
Sources further revealed that UPFA is expected to finalize the allocation of candidates to parties that have come forward to contest under the betel leaf symbol by Wednesay.
In the meantime it is learnt that Eelam People’s Democratic Front led by Minister Douglas Devananda is expected to contest in the election in the betel Leaf symbol.
But PLOTE as well as EPRLF Varathar Group is expected to contests jointly as an independent Group according to political sources.
