42 SLA killed in Mannaar clashes

20 Sri Lanka Army soldiers were killed in an intensive counter-attack launched by the Tigers on SLA units that attempted to move through Paalaikkuzhi targeting Adampan on Tuesday, the Tigers said. The direct clash intensified after LTTE mounted artillery attack on Tha'l'laadi garrison and the fighting lasted till 12:30 p.m. Meanwhile, a unit of SLA troops that advanced was trapped, unable to pull back, in an open area along Paalaikkuzhi - Adampan road at 1:30 p.m. LTTE's long range snipers, who engaged the unit, gunned down 22 SLA soldiers between 4:30 and 6:00 p.m., Mannaar Operations Command of the LTTE told media.

Normalcy has been disturbed in Mannaar city Tuesday from 8:10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. as Sri Lanka Army mounted an artillery barrage simultaneously from all its camps in Mannaar towards Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam territories, reportedly after an artillery box barrage carried out by the Tigers targeting Tha'l'laadi garrison. The SLA soldiers manning the sentry posts along the causeway between Mannaar island and Tha'l'laadi garrison pulled back to the city as LTTE fired artillery shells began hitting their positions in the morning, killing at least 6 soldiers and wounding 10, according to official figures by the SLA. All traffic to and from city has halted and mobile phone links were cut off.
Although normalcy returned to the city around 2:00 p.m., the traffic to and from the island was yet to resume.
The city was shaken by the deafening sound of an outgoing artillery barrage, according to initial reports.
The SLA began firing Multi Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) and artillery shells from their bases in Maanthai, Uyilangkul'am, South Bar and the Tha'l'laadi garrison.
The artillery duel comes after a three-pronged SLA ground push was thwarted Monday evening in Pa'ndivirichchaan area.
Meanwhile, 2 SLA soldiers and a civilian (a boy) were wounded during a SLA launched cordon and search operation in the 100-houses-scheme at Periyaakamam situated between Mannaar and Thalaimannaar Monday night around 2:00 a.m. Armed men exchanged gunfire with the SLA which attempted to seize a stock of supplies in the encounter, Police said.

Thalladi church damaged in LTTE artillery attack- Mannar
[Updated] LTTE launched artillery barrages fell at the densely populated Thalladi town this morning (February 12) damaging the Thalladi Church, Mannar defence sources said.
According to military sources, LTTE mounted artillery shell attacks since 08.35.a.m.
SLA retaliated with heavy gun fire towards identified LTTE artillery positions in the non-liberated areas north of Mannar, security sources said.
Six soldiers who were at the St. Sebastian church premises were killed while another ten received injuries due to this incident.
These soldiers were participating in a "Shramadana" campaign as the request made by the Rev. The shelling came as the defence ministry said 42 Tamil Tiger rebels and 11 soldiers were killed in new clashes across the island's embattled north on Monday.
The fighting in the Weli Oya area also left 35 security personnel and 21 rebels wounded, a defence official said.
According to the defence ministry, 1,168 rebels and 68 government soldiers and police have been killed so far this year.
Casualty figures given by the government cannot be independently verified as journalists and human rights workers are not allowed to enter the battle zone.
The Sri Lankan government last month officially pulled out of a defunct truce with the rebels, who have fought for more than three decades for an independent ethnic homeland in the Sinhalese-majority island.
The conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives.

Feb 12, Colombo: An artillery attack launched by the Tamil Tiger rebels in Mannar this morning killed six soldiers, the military said.
Defense sources said the LTTE fired artillery shells at the densely populated Thalladi town damaging the St. Sebastian Church and killing six soldiers who were participating in a "Shramadana" campaign at the request of the church. Another ten soldiers were injured in the attack.
Troops retaliated with heavy gun fire towards identified LTTE artillery positions in the non-liberated areas north of Mannar, security sources said.
