1000 homeguards to protect Yala
An urgent recruitment drive is underway to recruit some 1000 youths for the Civil Defence Force (Home Guard) from the villages near the Yala Sanctuary.

300 youth in Yala armed

Shot guns have been distributed among 300 youth in the border villages of Yala in order to protect their villages from LTTE threats following five murders and three cases of abductions reported from the area.

Re awakening of the East (Negenahira Udanaya) expedited

Among the several projects launched to fast track the development of the East, the Government has paid special attention to education, according to Coordinating Secretary of the Ministry of Education, S.M.T.U. Senaratne. In order to run the schools appropriately the vacancies for the positions of principals would be filled by those who have passed the relevant examination and vacancies of teachers would be filled by those trained under the ‘Tharuna Aruna’ programms, he said.Steps would be taken to fill vacancies in Trincomalee and Muttur as a matter of priority, he added.
With a view to developing the agricultural sector of the East, 32,000 cashew plants will be distributed among the cashew planters along the Batticaloa, Amparai, and Trincomalee coast line, Cashew Corporation Director T.D. Nidharshan said.
At present about 600 acers of land have come under cashew cultivation under the Reawakening of the East programme.
